How Do Fuel Spill Digesters Achieve Cleanup?
The key is bioremediation – using natural microorganisms to metabolise and break down the complex fuel hydrocarbons.
Harnessing Microbial Power
Certain bacteria, yeasts and fungi have evolved the ability to use compounds in fuels like petrol, diesel and oil as an energy source. They produce enzymes that degrade and digest the long chains of hydrogen and carbon atoms.
We’ve isolated strains highly capable of hydrocarbon degraders and nurtured them in our spill treatment bioreactors. Some can even break down aromatic compounds like benzene, which are more stubborn.
Optimising Their Activity
The microbes work best under the right conditions – we carefully monitor and control factors like oxygen levels, temperature, pH and nutrient concentrations in our digesters.
We also have proprietary delivery mechanisms to introduce them immediately and maximise contact with the contaminants. We underwent over 50 trials to develop the most effective oil dispersant blend with microbial cultures.
Tracking the Progress
As the microbes break down the fuel hydrocarbons, we take regular samples to check via gas chromatography that harmful compounds are diminishing. Rates vary based on temperature, soil type, rainfall, etc., but we generally see significant cleanup in 4-6 weeks.
Success Stories

- Diesel contaminated soil at a factory site was restored to regulatory limits after 12 weeks of digester application

It’s very satisfying to see blackened beaches or fields return to their natural state thanks to bioremediation. The microbes have done wonders at several problematic landfills and industrial wastelands.
Potential Limitations
While fuel spill digesters are powerful, some challenges remain:
- Large Spills: Very high volumes, like deep ocean spills, overwhelm the microbes, requiring other methods like skimmers or booms to assist.
- Cold Weather: Microbial activity slows down at low temperatures. We use greenhouses and heaters for winter remediation.
- Toxins: The process works only for hydrocarbons. Heavy metals, solvents or radioactive waste require different remediation protocols.
Overall, Fuel Spill Digester is most effective for containing spills up to 50,000 gallons. With our advances in microbial blends, the upper limit is constantly improving.
